Accidents happen—especially in homes with active mountain dogs. Whether it’s a new puppy or an aging senior, dealing with pet urine or feces quickly and correctly is the difference between a simple spot removal and a permanent stain.
After 38 years of cleaning Evergreen's toughest pet messes, here is our expert advice on what to do (and what not to do) before the XL van pulls into your driveway.
1. Blot, Don't Scrub
If the mess is liquid (urine), your goal is to remove as much moisture as possible.
The Technique: Use a thick stack of white paper towels or a clean white cloth. Stand on them if you have to! Use firm, steady pressure.
The Trap: Never scrub back and forth. Scrubbing pushes the liquid deeper into the carpet fibers and the pad, making it much harder for us to extract later.
2. The Gentle Lift (For Feces)
If the mess is solid, timing is everything.
The Technique: Use a dull knife or a spoon to gently lift the solids away. Work from the outside of the spot toward the center to keep it from spreading.
The Trap: Avoid using heavy-duty "grocery store" spot cleaners. Many of these contain bleaches or high-alkaline chemicals that can "set" the stain permanently or damage the carpet dye.
The "Pro" Warning: If the mess is mostly liquid, stop! Do not touch it. Trying to clean a liquid mess yourself usually results in smearing it across a wider area and pushing the waste deeper into the carpet fibers.
The Laundry Basket Trick: Simply place a laundry basket over the spot to keep pets and family members away. Let it sit, and let it dry. It is much easier (and cleaner) for us to extract once it has stabilized. We have the professional tools to deal with it—don't risk making it a permanent part of your floor!
3. Skip the "Home Remedies"
You’ll see a lot of advice online about using vinegar, baking soda, or dish soap.
The Reality: While well-intentioned, these can sometimes create a chemical reaction that locks the odor into the carpet backing.
The Better Way: Once you’ve removed the bulk of the mess, just lay a damp (not soaking) white cloth over the area. This keeps the spot from drying out and "crusting," which makes our organic sponges much more effective at lifting the remaining particles.
4. Give Us the "Full Story"
When we arrive, don't be shy! Tell us exactly where the accidents happened.
The XL Advantage: We use specialized tools to find hidden spots that the naked eye might miss. Knowing exactly what happened (and if any other cleaners were used) helps us choose the right "expert secret" to treat the area effectively.
